Notes

A superb example of one of the most significant luxury sports watches ever created, this Vacheron Constantin 222 reference 44018/144A-222 embodies the pure spirit of late-1970s horological innovation. Launched in 1977 to celebrate the 222ᵗʰ anniversary of the maison, the model marked a bold new chapter for the manufacture, a watch conceived for modern living, combining technical performance with the absolute refinement for which Vacheron Constantin is renowned.

Designed by the young prodigy Jörg Hysek, the 222 is instantly recognizable by its sharply faceted monobloc case and integrated bracelet, crowned by the discreet yet iconic Maltese cross proudly embedded at 5 o’clock, an architectural detail unique to this reference. This coveted stainless-steel version, often referred to as the “Jumbo,” features a classically proportioned 37 mm case housing the ultra-thin automatic calibre 1121, one of the finest movements of its era, admired for its elegance, precision and technical sophistication.

The present example is fitted with a rare and attractive black dial, offering superb contrast, depth and legibility, a configuration long favored by informed collectors for its discreet yet powerful aesthetic. The overall condition is excellent, with case lines remaining crisp and harmonious. The integrated steel bracelet retains its original geometry and wrist presence.

Distinguishing this piece further is its remarkably complete documentation: original papers, and a Vacheron Constantin Extract from the Archives confirming its authenticity and historic production data. Such completeness is exceptionally desirable within the vintage 222 market, where surviving sets remain few and fiercely sought after.

Today, the 222 is firmly recognized as one of the founding icons of the luxury sports watch category, a peer to the Royal Oak and Nautilus yet produced in strikingly low numbers, making the hunt for exemplary specimens a defining challenge for collectors of high horology.

With its prestigious provenance, rare black dial, superb preservation and full accompanying documentation, this 222 represents an outstanding opportunity to acquire a cornerstone of Vacheron Constantin’s design heritage, an essential piece in any world-class collection of vintage sports timepieces.
