Van Cleef & Arpels, “Cadenas”
Bold and timeless, the Van Cleef & Arpels Cadenas® watch is as contemporary today as it was when first created in 1935. Its distinctive design features an angled dial enabling the time to be read discretely, while the straight lines of its case combine harmoniously with the curves of the clasp.
Van Cleef & Arpels had been making sumptuous bejewelled watches since the 1920’s, but it was not until 1935 that the Maison created the model which would define the marriage between beauty and functionality: the “Cadenas” watch. The cadenas, in French, or “lock”, is a strong symbol of union and alliance between two families or two individuals. Legend has it that the Duke or Duchess of Windsor originally suggested this concept for the watch. Since then, it has been a permanent feature in the Van Cleef & Arpels timepiece collections.
