VIEL-ROBIN FOUR DAY MARINE CHRONOMETER M. Viel-Robin, Paris, No. 151. Made circa 1870. Fine and unusual, mahogany, four-day going marine chronometer with pivoted detent escapement, power reserve indication, original winding key and locking key.

C. Two-body, mahogany, numbered ivory plaque, brass bowl weighted with a lead weight, gimballed suspension. D. Silvered with champleve radial Roman numerals, outer minute track, large subsidiary seconds and power-reserve scale. Polished blued steel Breguet hands. M. Brass two frame with cylindrical pillars, fusee with chain and Harrison?s maintaining power, Henri Robert type pivoted detent escapement set in a smaller circular cage, two-arm bimetallic compensation balance with wedge-shaped temperature weights and timing screws, free sprung blued steel helical balance spring, diamond endstone. Dial signed. DIAL DIAM. 115 mm. DIM. 18.5 x 19.5 x 19.5 cm.

Notes

Although running for four days only, this chronometer is built from an eight day going chronometer caliber. The pivoted detent escapement is very similar to that devised by Henri Robert in Paris, circa 1830. Viel-Robin was a relative of the eminent maker Robert Robin.
