The portrait is made the year of his marriage with Louisa Frederica Augusta Cavendish (1832-1911), Duchess of Devonshire, formerly Louisa Montagu, Duchess of Manchester, née Luise Fredericke Auguste, Countess von Alten, German-born British aristocrat sometimes referred to as the “Double Duchess” due to her marriages to first the Duke of Manchester and later to the Duke of Devonshire.
