Notes

Global Survivors Fund :After receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in 2018 for their individual efforts to end sexual violence as a weapon of war, Dr Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad created the Global Survivors Fund. The Global Survivors Fund works with and for survivors of conflict-related sexual violence towards the realisation of their legal right to a remedy and reparation for the harms they have suffered. These efforts address a gap in support that survivors have long identified. The work of the Global Survivors Fund, which spans advocacy, legal and technical support, academic research, and the provision of interim reparative measures for survivors, has touched over 20 countries.

Provenance

Property of Dr Denis Mukwege

Biography

Dr Denis Mukwege is a world leading specialist in the treatment of wartime sexual violence and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, 2018. Through his experience as a gynaecologist in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Dr Mukwege witnessed first-hand the life-long damage caused by conflict-related sexual violence. This has led him to become a global campaigner against the use of rape as a weapon of war. Dr Mukwege has received numerous awards for his work, including the UN Human Rights Prize (2008), the Right Livelihood Award (2013) and the Sakharov Prize of the European Parliament (2014). Together with Nadia Murad, he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2018 for his tireless efforts to end sexual violence as a weapon of war.
