After a fresh start in 1983 under JEAN-CLAUDE BIVER, the firm, which was founded in 1735 by JEHAN-JACQUES BLANCPAIN, continues today under the new and equally skilled leadership of CEO MARC HAYEK. The tradition for fine watchmaking continues in its premises in Le Brassus and Villeret in the Vallée de Joux, placing the emphasis on craftsmanship and tradition. In 1988 Blancpain presented the “Six Masterpieces of the Watchmaking Art”, classic and understated wristwatches symbolizing the essence of watchmaking and highlighting movement complications rather than merely fancy case designs. Intended as a tribute to the countless watchmakers and craftsmen who as farmers turned to watchmaking for additional income during the cold and harsh winters, and in doing so laid the foundations of watchmaking and tool-making that remain the basis of the horological culture today. Watchmakers never rest on their laurels, and 1991 saw the presentation of one of the most complicated wristwatches ever made until today - the “1735”. It took 6 years of research, development and testing before the highly complicated and complex masterpiece could be presented, uniting the complications of the “Six Masterpieces” in a single watch! “Calibre 1735” comprises 740 finely finished movement parts. Only 2 specialists assemble these extraordinary micromechanical wonder. This particular example appears to be the only example fitted with special blue hands to increase readability and as the watch carries a lifetime warranty, it was serviced recently and is still under warranty until September 2019, a wonderful complication ready to be worn and appreciated.

The Ref. 5970 - a writs-chronograph with perpetual calendar - represents a “Must” in the production of the Genevan manufacture. This model is the heir to an impressive series of watches that has ensured the reputation of the brand among collectors. It all started in the 1940’s with the launch of Ref. 1518, which will be followed in the 1950’s by Ref. 2499, then in the 1980’s by the Ref. 3970. If these models are now highly coveted by amateurs, it is due to the fact that after the Second World War, Patek Philippe was the only watchmaker in the world to be able to produce in series this kind of parts, certainly in a few examples each year but of a remarkable quality of execution. The Ref. 5970 was launched in 2004 and will be produced until 2011. It remains today a very popular model among collectors, not only because its classic line is timeless but also because it incorporates the latest movements of manual-winding chronograph made by the manufacture (based on a highly improved Lémania calibre) - the Cal. CH 27-70 Q -, before Patek Philippe presents his own movement used for the new Ref. 5270. The Ref. 5971 was launched in 2007, with a platinum case, a bezel set with 36 baguette diamonds (total WEIGHT around 4 carats, Top Wesselton quality) and a black lacquered dial. It remains available in the product catalogue for just three years. It can therefore be reasonably assumed that the number of examples sold should not exceed one hundred units. The Ref. 5971 remains in the eyes of connoisseurs the “Classic column-wheel chronograph with perpetual calendar, accented by the eternal fire of diamonds”

This model will be treasured as one of the most complicated timepieces that Patek Philippe has ever created. It combines an automatic movement with minute repeater, perpetual calendar and moon phase mechanism in a timepiece first built for the company’s 150th anniversary in 1989. The case of Ref. 3974 was made for Patek Philippe by the celebrated Jean-Pierre Hagmann, whose case maker’s marks are stamped to the bottom right lug. The repeater may be made to sound the hours and quarters and the elapsed minutes since the last quarter. Received as a gift to the current family, the watch has remained in virtually unused condition and has never been polished as can clearly be seen on the lugs and the hallmarks that are crisp

Sold: CHF 401,000

Launched in Basel in 1997, the Aquanaut was a revolution in the world of sport watches by Patek Philippe, a new line resembling the Nautilus, mounted on a rubber strap, a premiere at the firm. The first reference launched was the 5060A with its tapisserie style dial, luminous indexes, rubber strap and a full caseback which was only produced on this reference. This model is most likely one of the pre-series versions, this example differs by having the word “Prototype” inscribed on the dial, a power reserve indicator (very similar to the Patek Nautilus 3710 launched in 1998) and the words engraved on the bridge “330/196 labo No. 04” and of course this special caliber 330/196 to accommodate the power reserve function, one never introduced on the Aquanaut. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a piece never commercialised and the only one ever to be offered on the market. Please note that due to the fact that this is a prototype never intended for sale, an extract from the archives will not be available.

Reference 3646: According to research made by some authors, 211 examples of reference 3646 appear to have been created; their pro - duction having begun in April 1940, including “Type D” model, of which only 79 examples are known. In order to meet the military needs of the Royal Italian Navy, which had already been supplied for several years with high precision instruments, Officine Panerai created “Radiomir”, a radium-based powder that gives luminosity to the dials of sighting instru - ments and devices. Reference to the name “Radiomir” is documented in the supplement to the patent filed in France on March 23, 1916. Circa 1936, the Royal Italian Navy asked Panerai to design a watch resistant to extreme underwater conditions while respecting the exact time. The pro - totype (now known as “Radiomir”) was submitted to the First Submarine Group Command. A further order was made and watches were supplied to the Italian naval forces as of 1938 (Regia Marina, later becoming the Marina Militare after World War II) and later on to the German Navy (Krie - gsmarine). The reference 2533, the first prototype for the “Radiomir”, was produced at the beginning of 1936 in few numbers. The second to be produced was reference 3646, in production until the 1950’s and produced in various versions classified “Type A” to “Type G”, each bea - ring unique aesthetics. Reference 3646 was made by Rolex for Panerai - between 1943 to 1944 - following strict technical requirements, notably a 47 mm. wide (for underwater legibility) cushion-shaped case with sol - dered curved wire lugs, screw down “onion” crown, 12-sided caseback and a “Perspex” crystal. This 116520 represents a good opportunity to have a new old stock watch with a color changed dial. Introduced in 2000, the new Daytona was a revolution as it became equipped finally with its own in-housecaliber (caliber 4130) replacing the old Zenith caliber 4030 that was basically used from 1988 until the year 2000. Color variations in Rolex dials due to faulty dials or humidity have long been appreciated by collectors and this variations from white to cream represents one of the last modern dial variations.
