A. Lange & Sôhne, Glashütte B/Dresden, No 48639, circa 1904. Fine and rare silver case keyless pocket chronometer used for the Nanga-Parbat-Expedition to the Himalaya in 1939, in original fitted case.

Four body massive "Jtirgen" case with engine turned back. Silver cuvette. Mat silver dial with engraved Roman numerals and subsidiary seconds. Blued steel "pear" hands. Fine frosted gilt brass 21"' three quarter plate movement, 21 jewels, pivoted detent escapement, brass escape wheel, brass-invar Guillaume balance, free sprung blued steel helical balance spring with terminal curves. Signed on the dial, the case and the movement. In very good condition. Diam. 62 mm. This watch was used as a navigation chronometer by the Nanga-Parbat Expedition to the Himalaya in 1939. Their return to India coincided with the outbreak of war and the entire party was interned. Upon their release this watch was sold to a Swiss gentleman living in India in order to pay for their retum to Europe. Very few chronometers with detent escapement were produced by Lange. A similar example is illustrated and described in Kurt Herkner: Glashütte und seine Uhren, page 152, where the unusual detent with off-set passing spring is also shown.

White enamel three piece dial with Arabic numerals and subsidiary seconds. Gold Louis XV hands. Very fine giIt brass 19"' three quarter plate movement, l a quality; 14 jewels, lateral gold lever escapement, cut bimetallic balance with poising screws and diamond endstone, Breguet balance spring with a swan neck micrometric index. The escapement is set on a 60 minute revolution carriage driven by the center wheel. Signed the dial, the case and the movement. In very good condition. Diam. 60 mm.

Six piece white enamel dial with Arabic numerals, red Arabic outer minute and chronograph rings, subsidiary dials for the days of the week, the months of the leap year cycle, the date and the subsidiary seconds with inner moon phase aperture. Gold Louis XV hands. Very fine nickel plated 19"' three quarter plate movement with diamond spotted decoration, 32 jewels in gold screwed settings, gold straight line lever escapement, cut bimetallic balance, Breguet balance spring with a swan neck micrometric index. Repeating on gongs by means of a slide on the band. The split second chronograph with a visible work, the push piece on the band. Signed on the dial, the case, numbered on the movement. In excellent condition. Diam. 60 mm. The split second chronograph is operated by a single button, performing the functions: start/split/stop/reset. Four body massive "Louis XV" polished case. Mat silver dial with blued steel high relief indexes, counter sunk subsidiary seconds and up/down sector. Blued steel "modernes" hands. Fine glazed rhodium plated three quarter plate movement, "fausses côtes" decoration, 15 jewels, double barrel with a differential winding train mounted on the back plate and "planetary" stop work with rack and pinion up/down off the differential gear. Spring detent escapement with a steel escape wheel, the jewels set in pressed gold settings. Very delicate three armed polished steel "flying" tourbillon carriage, driven by the third wheel. Signed on the back plate. In excellent condition. Diam. 59 mm. The flying tourbillons, made following the principals of Professor Alfred Helwig, represent the ultimate achievement in the making of revolving escapements. The few exanples made at the Lange school can certainly be counted amongst the masterpieces of German horology. Very fine nickel plated 19"' movement, " fausses côtes" decoration, the bridge in the form of conjoined initiais, 12 jewels on the carriage, pivoted detent escapement, gold escape wheel, cut bimetallic balance, blued steel balance spring with a terminal curve. The three armed polished steel carriage of Guinand 2nd. pattern, is driven by the third wheel. In very good condition. Diam. 53 mm. Guinand, produced three models of Tourbillon carriage, and cluring his lifetime worked for several important makers including Girard Perregaux and Montandon.
