Dials, cases and movements signed Juvet in Chinese characters. DIAM. 56 mm. Although most of the watches and snuffboxes destined for the Chinese market were made in pairs, the majority of them were separated. JUVET One of the important Swiss horological families working for the Chinese market. EDOUARD JUVET (1820- 1883) established his workshop in Buttes in 1842, but in 1844 moved to Fleurier. He began making "Chinese" watches in 1856. Edouard's sons AMI-LOUIS and LÉO travelled to China to work in the family firm. In Shanghai, the Juvets were rivaled only by the Bovets, yet the two families maintained friendly relations. The Maison Juvet prospered, opening branches in Tien-Tsin and Saigon. In 1873, Edouard Juvet registered a trademark in Chinese characters which was used on the company's products.

DIAM. 59 mm. WILLIAM ILBERY (?-1839) Active in London from 1780. Following JAMES COX in London and JAQUET DROZ in Switzerland, he specialized in luxury watches made for the Chinese market. His early production was in the English style, with a full plate movement and an English type single wheel duplex escapement; however for his highest quality watches he incorporated a spring detent escapement. The cases were in the style of those made in England at the time. Later, his watch movements were much inspired by the Lepine caliber with freestanding barrel, as were those of Jaquet Droz's Swiss production signed in London and that of WILLIAM ANTHONY, who worked in London. He set a new standard for watches made for the Asian market. He had profusely engraved movements made in Switzerland, mainly in Fleurier, being followed in this by makers such as Bovet and Juvet. Bovet and Juvet organized the mass production of silver-cased watches and later, once their Canton manufactures were opened, assembled them in China. Ilbery can therefore be considered the "father" of "Chinese" watches as they are known today. Ilbery's watch cases were decorated by Geneva's best enamelers, such as JEAN-FRANCOIS-VICTOR DUPONT and JEAN- LOUIS RICHTER. He seems to have maintained close contacts with the continental trade, since a watch signed "Ilbery Paris" is known and Ilbery & Son are recorded in London and Fleurier, as well as in Canton. This presentation is from SANDBERG COLLECTION.

Dial signed. DIM. 92 x 48.5 x 16 cm. The movement of the present clock was probably fitted in the late 19th or early 20th century. ANTOINE I GAUDRON b. c. 1640; d. Paris 3 August 1714. Married to Anne Baignoux 1671. Father of Pierre, Antoine II and Marie-Anne, who married Guillaume Hubert, merchant goldsmith in Paris, and later Marchand-orfevre de la reine d'Angleterre, Merchant goldsmith to the Queen of England in London. Received as master at Saint-Gcrmain-des-Pr&s between 1660 and 1665, then in Paris on 5 June 1675. Jure 1690-1692. Associated with his sons to trade in "clocks, precious stones, pictures, mirrors, porcelains, bronzes and jewels" 1698. Established Place Dauphin at La Perle 1698 and also at La Renommte 1709, He died comfortably off, leaving more than 174,000 livres. Technically, he invented remarkable movements with several functions. According to his son Pierre, he made in 1688 a "regulator... which followed equations by means of a curve which raised or lowered the clock", which would make it the first French equation clock. It is highly probable that this invention, unconfirmed by any other evidence, was only partially perfected. Antoine Gaudron was Charles Le Bon's best man at his wedding on 18 August 1707, while Pierre Gaudron wrote in his will that Julien Le Roy "has always showed the greatest gratitude to, and the most sincere admiration for my deceased father", leaving him the 1688 clock among others. It is possible that Le Bon and Le Roy were his compagnons; they were certainly his pupils.
