The maiden is seated with a dead canary on her lap, while the young man stands romantically writing an ode to the girl's lost virginity which the dead bird represents. The Rose.Piguet & Meylan, No. 3564, Geneva, circa 1820.Magnificent and extremely rare, 18 ct. gold and enamel, pearl-set, centre-seconds, two-train, musical automaton watch, playing on the hour and on request, designed as a pink rose, made for the Chinese market.

Two-body, the back very finely painted with the underside of the rose, showing sumptuous pink petals and two green leaves, the pearl-set stem, which forms the pendant, terminates with five graduated pearl-set petals at the centre of the rose. The bezel painted with rose petals, the edge decorated with a geometrical pattern in dark blue enamel and set with half pearls. D. White, eccentric Roman hour chapter ring with outer minute divisions set at the top of the background painting depicting aarden with roses and forget-me-nots, the sea beyond with the Temple of Love on a cliff. The foreground with varicoloured gold automata of a lady playing the harp, while Cupid accompanies her on a lyre, a nesting dove behind him. Blued-steel Breguet hands. The Apple KnifeUnsigned, Geneva, circa 1820.Exceptional 18 ct. gold and enamel, pearl-set, folding fruit knife, with music, concealed watch and magnifying glass.

C. Each side of the handle similarly decorated with two enamelled medallions, the upper ones on each side are painted with an allegory of music, with pearls below and above, the lower with flowers and pearl-set motifs; the front panel slides to reveal the watch by pressing a pearl in the centre. A small pushpiece on the side releases the spring-loaded magnifying glass; the blade with champlevé foliate decoration in blue enamel, including the spine. D. White enamel, Breguet numerals, gold engravecentre, set in a square panel of dark blue enamel with gold foliage. Blued-steel 'spearhead' hands. M. The WatermelonPiguet & Meylan, Geneva, No. 3654, circa 1820.Magnificent and rare 18 ct. gold and enamel, pearl-set, centre-seconds, two-train, musical automaton watch with concealed dial, playing on the hour and on request, designed as a watermelon, made for the Chinese market.

C. Two-body, 'fermée' type, the front half of the watermelon spring-loaded to reveal the dial, both halves entirely enamelled and divided into five domed sectors, each with translucent green enamel over a flinqué ground, alternately decorated with engraved gold foliage with a champlevé red rose in the centre, the hinged edges set with graduated half pearls. D. The fruit contains a musical automaton set within a stylised foliate engraved gold mask. The varicoloured gold automaton, which has a paited enamel background of a rose garden beside a lake and houses on the far bank, consists of two musicians, one plays a lyre and the other a harp. In the foreground is an attentive dog. Above the scene is the white enamel dial with Roman hour chapter ring and outer minute divisions. Blued-steel Breguet hands. M. 35 mm o, brass bridge calibre, fixed barrel, cylinder escapement, brass escape wheel, gold three-arm balance, blued-steel flat balance spring. Colère d'Achille.Attributed to James Cox, London, circa 1765.Magnificent and extremely rare 20 ct. gold, silver, ivory enamel, ruby and emerald-set fan with a watch and a compartment containing a small mirror and the winding key, made for the Ch'ien Lung Imperial family (1736-1795), of the Ch'ing Dynasty. In a Chinese fitted box.Fan: Two-sided, frame with 16 ivory sticks. Down the length of each of the guardsticks is, within a diamond foliate design, a dragon chasing a snake made up entirely of emeralds and rubies. The edges of the sixteen closed sticks are jointly carved with two dragons, one on each side of the fan; when the fan is open, their pierced and carved floral and lattice decoration is dominated by two winged dragons. These have five claws on each foot, a decorative privilege restricted to the Chinese Imperiafamily. The paper leaf is painted with a scene adapted from a painting by Antoine Coypel (1661-1722) of a quarrel between Achilles and Agamemnon, which was engraved by Nicolas Tardieu with the title 'Colère d'Achille'. The central figure is Agamemnon, who had won a priest's daughter as a prize of war and then given her up, following the advice of the seer Calchas, who foresaw disaster. There was trouble anyway, as Agamemnon, to compensate for the loss, seized a slave-girl Briseis belonging to Ahilles. Agamemnon is pointing imperiously outside Achilles' tent who, although he has been omitted from this adaptation, has his hand on the sword he is about to draw. The reverse is also painted and has a landscape with a shepherdess on a donkey and a companion beside her. The fan pivot, with ruby-set bezels, is in gold and Imperial blue translucent champlevé enamel. The front contains the watch and the matching back has a moss agate in the centre covering a compartment containing a small mirroand the winding key.D. Accompanied by the Breguet certificate No. 3781, delivered in December 1982.
