French, 18th century.Wood, tortoiseshell and gilt bronze mantel watch holder, so-called "Boulle", underneath the watch aperture is a scene representing Juno guided by Cupid, the top part, which topples over to allow for the watch, is decorated with an eagle holding an egg in its left claw, as a symbol of fertility. The scene probably evokes the story of Jupiter seducing Juno. The whole is richly decorated with floral volutes and ornaments in the Regency style. Previously in the Jean Puraye Collection, exhibited in te Musée International d'Horlogerie, la Chaux de Fonds.

The scene is taken from Greek mythology: Prometheus, a Titan who stole fire from Olympus to give to mankind, was chained to a rock in punishment, where an eagle tore at his liver until Hercules freed him. The watch holder is mounted on a shaped base.
